Why Caral is special
Caral is the oldest city in the Americas — roughly 5,000 years old, contemporary with the pyramids of Egypt, and built by a civilisation that seems to have known no war. Six earthen pyramids and sunken circular plazas spread across a desert valley, almost empty of crowds. It's one of the most significant ancient sites in the world, and still one of the least visited relative to its importance.
The practicalities of the day
It's a committed day trip: about three hours from Lima each way, so tours run early-to-evening as full days. There's no simple do-it-yourself route, which is why guided day trips are the standard way to go — they handle the long transfer and, crucially, the interpretation that brings the ruins to life.
Go guided
More than at most sites, a guide matters here: much of Caral is weathered earthen architecture that's easy to under-read without context. A good guide turns that into the gripping story of the Americas' first city — its pyramids, its music, its quipu and its peace. It's the single biggest thing that makes the day worthwhile.
Come prepared, and consider the coast
Dress for open desert — hat, sunscreen, water, sturdy shoes — and pace yourself on the long day.
